10 Colorado Innovation Investment Tax Credit

Attachments:
HB_09-1105.pdf
CIITC_Application_rev_2_1_10.pdf

Subject: Colorado Innovation Investment Tax Credit

Dear Economic Development professional –

This email is being sent to organizations and individuals throughout Colorado to publish information about a State of Colorado income tax credit that began on January 1, 2010.   We’d greatly appreciate your assistance in disseminating information about this tax credit program to other organizations and individuals.

HB 09-1105 (attached) created the Colorado Innovation Investment Tax Credit (CIITC).  CIITC provides an income tax credit (against Colorado income taxes) for investing entities that make investments during calendar year 2010 in small, innovative Colorado companies that are involved in research and development or manufacturing of new technologies, processes, and/or products.  Note that the investing entity cannot be a C Corporation.

The tax credit is equal to 15% of the investment up to a maximum tax credit of $20,000 for investments in any one business. The $20,000 credit is limited to each investor for each small business. (In no event can an individual/investing entity receive more than $20,000 worth of tax credits for investments made in the same business.) The maximum tax credit amount for the entire program for the 2010 tax year is $750,000.

The Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT) is responsible for implementing and managing this new program.  OEDIT has prepared the attached CIITC Application package which contains additional information about the program and guidance regarding the application and review process.   The Application Package is for use (1) by the entity making the investment to apply for the tax credit (see Part A of the application), and (2) by the business receiving the investment to apply for certification by OEDIT as a qualified small business (see Part B of the application).  Note that a small business may submit Part B to OEDIT prior to, or at the time of, the investment.

Requests for tax credits are processed on a first come, first serve basis.   This is an important consideration since the program is limited to $750,000 for calendar year 2010.  As of August 26, 2010, approximately $450,000 remain available for this tax credit program.

Additional information may be found at:  http://www.colorado.gov/cs/Satellite/OEDIT/OEDIT/1251568656373.

Please give us a call, or reply via email, if you have additional questions or require clarification.

Dear Jack Keever,

Kelly Manning

Did you know that women-owned businesses in the United States account for 40 percent of all privately held firms, and 16 percent of all U.S. employment? It's true! And according to a recent report by The Guardian Life Small Business Research Institute, female-owned small businesses will be responsible for creating 5 - 5.5 million jobs in the United States by 2018, or one third of ALL new jobs created.

The CSBDC recognizes the importance of women-owned businesses and salutes the contributions of this diverse category to the economy. Our August 20th Women's Small Business Conference in Breckenridge brought over 80 female entrepreneurs together to network and learn from specialty workshops and panels.  Thanks for those of you who joined us in Breckenridge and this July's Durango Women's Conference. In the coming years, we will continue to host events specifically for female entrepreneurs and to offer free, confidential one-on-one counseling for all.

Sincerely,

Kelly Manning

Success Story:  La Junta SBDC Client Kuhn Financial & Insurance Strategies Can Help Your Life Savings To Last a Lifetime

Anita Kuhn was well-known in the town of Las Animas for 15 years as an award-winning social services representative who looked out for the interests of the community.  After her retirement in early 2010, Anita decided that she wasn't finished and branched out into a business of her own: Kuhn Financial & Insurance Strategies, LLC, headquartered in Rocky Ford, CO.

Anita's primary aim is to help people with retirement concerns. Anxiety over retirement is particularly acute these days, and Anita seeks to reassure and help people take control over their own financial destiny. She can show clients how to protect assets from major illness and nursing home costs, teach new strategies for today's investors, and to help clients avoid taking required minimum distributions. By helping to preserve and protect an individual's retirement in volatile times, Kuhn Financial & Insurance Strategies seeks to make your life savings LAST a lifetime.

Kuhn took advantage of the small business assistance services available in rural Colorado. The Otero Junior College Small Business Development Center (SBDC) helped to make Kuhn Financial & Insurance Strategies a reality.  Director Bill Dutro assisted Anita from the very beginning with the ins and outs of the business registration process, even down to helping her pick a name and determining the best legal structure for her business. She is the first tenant with an office in the new Business and Arts Incubator at 408 North Main Street in Rocky Ford, Colorado.

The
La Junta SBDC works with start-up and existing businesses in Baca, Bent, Crowley, Kiowa, Otero, and Prowers counties to develop business plans and create successful enterprises.  For more information about the services offered by the La Junta SBDC at OJC, please contact Bill Dutro at (719) 384-6959. For more information about protecting your reitrement today, please give Kuhn Financial & Insurance Strategies a call today at (719)- 316-2753, ext 104.
