Watkins is located about eight miles east of Denver along I-70, and is the western most Community along the Eastern I-70 Corridor. The area was settled initially in 1860 when the Overland Stage Line developed a stage-stop nearby, called Box Elder #2.
Its first Post Office was established in 1878 and now serves 1160 residents.
In recent years, more development has occurred in and near Watkins. Commercially that includes a Sunflower seed processing plant and a Solar Farm. In addition, a nearby neighborhood of nearly 100 homes has been built as well as a Traditional “Latin Mass” Catholic Church.
